In 1898, Harry L. Gaines founded the Gaines Heating Company specializing in the installation and repair of coal fired central steam, hot water and gravity air heating systems. In fact, chimney cleaning was a mainstay of the business. American Radiator Company authorized Gaines Heating as their first St. Louis Yellow Pages dealer. Harry L. Gaines was an organizer of the St. Louis Better Business Association (Bureau). Mr. Gaines trained five sons and together they developed a reputation as the area's specialists in "revamping unsatisfactory systems". In the early 1940's, his son Harry Gaines became the company President and the business continued to transform with the advent of coal stokers, oil and gas heating systems, along with residential central air conditioning equipment.

A tradition had been established and Gaines was recognized as specialists in complete design, installation, replacement, and service of all types of heating and cooling systems.
